Trefonen v Welshpool Town reserves

2.30pm  6 April 2019

Montgomeryshire Amateur League
Trefonen 1 Welshpool Town reserves 0 (att 30)

Most Montgomeryshire Amateur Leagues clubs I've visited have been for cup ties on Sundays, but Trefonen are based over the border in England and so don't enter the Montgomeryshire Cup. That meant a Saturday visit was necessary to complete the league.

It was a good place to complete the set, Trefonen Playing Field is not just a scenic setting but was also a better ground than I'd expected. It's just an open pitch, not railed of roped off, but there's a pair of dugouts, grass banking to get a good view of the game, and a snack bar selling refreshments.

Trefonen FC are a relatively new club, and this narrow win maintained their 100% home record this season, keeping them on track for promotion to division one.

They had to work hard to beat a youthful Welshpool Town reserve team, and did so thanks to a scrappy but deserved goal in the second half. It was a hard-fought and enjoyable game, and it was good to see a decent turnout of local people to watch it.
