6pm 1 April 2019
Chester and Wirral League, Championship
Orange Athletic Chester 3 AFC Park North 1 (att 11)
The clocks going forward signals the start of a rush of midweek games at low levels and at venues I probably wouldn't visit on a Saturday, although a mild winter and smaller divisions means there's likely to be fewer options than usual this year.
I had a couple of choices tonight, both in the lower of the Chester and Wirral League's two divisions and only a few miles apart. First stop was Ship Street in Frodsham, and with players warming up when I arrived that's where I stayed.
This is the lowest level you can play Saturday afternoon football in this part of the world, and so it was no surprise that the standard wasn't high. To be fair to the players the pitch, one of two full-sized ones at the ground, had a poor surface.
Orange Athletic Chester (an odd name for a team based 10 miles from Chester) went ahead in the opening moments, and with AFC Park North bottom of the league and having already conceded more than 160 goals a one-sided match looked likely.
It didn't happen though, and the visitors were level by half time. Orange Athletic responded after the break with two goals to win the game, and they should have scored more, but Park North had their moments and looked better than their league record suggests.
