4.20pm 13 April 2019
Perry Street and District League, Premier Division
Chard United 1 Shepton Beauchamp 1 (att 20)
Sometimes kick offs fall into place perfectly. This game was scheduled for 4.30pm (it started 10 minutes early) as Chard United's reserves were at home earlier, and with Ilminster Town's early kick off I was able to get to both.
Apart from a cup final a few years ago this was my first experience of the Perry Street and District League, and it was a full-blooded and entertaining game, even if the standard of football wasn't the highest.
That said, both goals were high quality. A shot from distance gave Shepton Beauchamp the lead, before a powerful header gave Chard United an equaliser, all before half time.
There were plenty more chances, but no more goals, and the result may help Chard United avoid relegation at the expense of Shepton Beauchamp.
If the visitors do go down they'll feel aggrieved at not getting a last minute penalty, for a blatant handball seen by everyone except the referee. They had two players sent off in the arguments that followed, but even with nine men it was Shepton Beauchamp who came closest to scoring in stoppage time.
Chard United play on one of two pitches at Jocelyn Park (the other is home to rivals Chard Rangers). It feels enclosed, has a steep slope and the grass could have done with a cut. Changing rooms are in a functional building at the side of the pitch.
