Wortley v Horsforth St Margaret's

6.30pm  5 May 2021

Yorkshire Amateur League, Supreme Division
Wortley 1 Horsforth St Margaret's 3 (att 69)

When a league names its top flight the 'supreme division' it sets an expectation that the football will be a high standard. I'm not sure that's always the case in the Yorkshire Amateur League, but this was certainly a high quality game.

It did feature two of the top three, and Horsforth's win might be a fatal blow to Wortley's title hopes.

Horsforth were much the sharper side in the first half, and deserved the two goals that put them in control. Wortley's second half performance was better, and a goal back midway through the second period set an exciting conclusion.

The home side pushed hard for an equaliser, but clear chances eluded them and their hopes evaporated when they were hit on the break about five minutes from the end.

Wortley's Blue Hill Lane ground is an unusual one, at least in terms of reaching the pitch from the car park. It's a long walk down, and a steep and testing climb back.

The pitch is railed on three sides, the exception being the far side where there's so little room between the edge of the playing surface and the boundary that the dugouts are set into the fence.
