Mendip Broadwalk v Clutton

3pm  8 May 2021

Somerset County League, Senior Cup, Group G
Mendip Broadwalk 3 Clutton 0 (att 35)

A longer trip than I'd planned, but overnight and early morning rain wiped out morning matches in Cheshire, so after a fruitless drive to Macclesfield I continued south and headed to Bristol.

I was last at Filwood Park Playing Fields in 2001, to see Broad Plain House in the Gloucestershire County League. That was 14 years before Mendip Broadwalk were even formed, but they've now enclosed their own pitch, separate to the one I visited two decades ago.

Inside the wooden fence is a railed off pitch with dugouts. There's some advertising boards, and hard standing around part of the pitch. It feels like a work in progress, and I wouldn't be surprised if Mendip Broadwalk climbed the leagues.

They kept themselves in pole position to qualify for the knockout stages of the Somerset County League's post-lockdown senior cup with a straightforward but entertaining win against Clutton.

The home side were 1-0 up at half time. In the second period Clutton's keeper was among the busiest players on the pitch, but Mendip's failure to take chances might have left them vulnerable to a Clutton equaliser.

Eventually they doubled their lead though, and a third goal in the final few minutes added a touch of gloss to the result.
