Halifax and District League, New Second League
Warley Rangers 5 St Columbas reserves 4 (att 20)
Ole Gunnar Solkjaer complained about Manchester United's schedule this week. I don't know how he'd have managed if he was in charge of St Columbas reserves, who were playing the first of two games inside 24 hours.
Their busy weekend got off a poor start with a defeat at Warley Rangers, but at least they had the satisfaction of being part of a nine goal thriller.
Warley were 3-1 up by half time, and increased their lead by another goal after the break. Then St Columbas rallied, scoring twice to trail by just a single goal.
A fifth for the home side looked to have made the points safe. Ultimately it did, but Warley had to withstand a final scare when St Columbas made it 5-4 in the last minute.
Like many competitions the Halifax League has had to reorganise to provide competitive football in a disrupted season. Both these sides were in the third tier, division two, of the regular season, and so both are the post-lockdown 'new second league'.
Warley Rangers have been in and out of the league. I saw them at home in 2012, when they played at a ground in Halifax. Their current home is a scenic spot on the outskirts of Sowerby Bridge.
There are two football pitches at the Astley Association Ground, separated by a small building that I assume includes changing rooms, currently out of bounds due to covid of course. The ground is high up, and provides excellent views of the surrounding area.
Excellent report sir.. Its sort of a preseason, preseason but great to a let the lads play after 2 regular seasons lost to covid.
