Stanningley Old Boys v Shire Academics

6.30pm  19 May 2021

Yorkshire Amateur League, Premier Division
Stanningley Old Boys 0 Shire Academics 3 (att 15)

The Yorkshire Amateur League's decision to conclude its season makes it a welcome source of fixtures as other competitions begin to wind down.

This second tier match (there's a supreme division above the premier) wasn't the greatest of games, but we had some goals and it was a pleasantly sunny evening in Leeds.

Stanningley are the division's bottom team. Their hopes of climbing away from the foot of the table suffered an early blow when Shire scored what turned out to be the first half's only goal.

For a long time it looked like being the game's only goal. The away side hit the crossbar, but other than that further scoring seemed unlikely until two late goals gave Shire a cushion. The visitors' third, an own goal, was the game's final moment.

Stanningley Old Boys play on an open pitch at Houghside. There's no facilities, but a steep grass bank on one side does provide an elevated view. I didn't see any changing rooms, and school buildings next to the pitch looked permanently closed.
