Wirral District FA, Amateur Cup, Semi-Final
Ellesmere Port 2 West Kirby reserves 1 (att 45)
This was my third visit to the Whitby Sports and Social Club, and each time I've seen a match on a different pitch.
In 1996 the home club was called Shell and the venue was the Shell Club. Shell FC became Ellesmere Port FC and at some point in the last 25 years they relocated to a new pitch. Their old one is now used for rugby.
Ellesmere Port's railed off pitch is right next door to that of Ellesmere Port Town, who I visited in 2015. Both clubs were at home tonight, so I was confident of seeing a game on the pitch I needed to complete the set.
Ellesmere Port are in the Chester and Wirral League, and so pulled off something of a cup shock by reaching the final of the Wirral Amateur Cup at the expense of West Kirby's second team, who play in the West Cheshire League.
The home side were well worth the win. West Kirby stared well enough, they thought they'd scored early but it was ruled out for offside, but they didn't have to wait long until a penalty put them 1-0 up.
After going in front the visitors lost their way. Ellesmere Port grew into the game and thoroughly deserved to make it 1-1 by half time, before going ahead early in the second half.
Time was on West Kirby's side but they never really threatened the Ellesmere Port goal. It was the home side who came closest to scoring as the half went on, but there were no more goals.
