Brushes Rangers Spartak v West Didsbury

10.15am  14 March 2015

Manchester Saturday Morning League, Division One
Brushes Rangers Spartak 4 West Didsbury 3 (att 4)

I watched this fixture last season and saw Brushes sweep to a 7-1 victory. A similar outcome looked to be on the cards this time as the home side romped into a 3-0 lead after just 24 minutes, a scoreline they took into the half time break.

But in the second half West Didsbury were transformed, as they staged a remarkable comeback. They scored twice, saved a Brushes penalty to keep themselves in the game, then levelled the match at 3-3.

Yet all their hard work was undone just a few minutes from the end, when an own goal settled the match in favour of the home side. It was a great entertainment, and took my mind off the biting cold wind that was blowing across the pitch.

Brushes Rangers Spartak have moved since my visit least season. Home games are now played at the Ken Ward Sports Centre in Hattersley, a few miles east of Manchester near Hyde. It's a busy place on a Saturday morning, with a kids' game on another pitch and activities in the sports hall.

The one full-sized football pitch, shared by Newton FC of the Lancashire and Cheshire Amateur League, has pair of dugouts on the far side.
