Tollcross Thistle v Lochend Amateurs

8pm  12 April 2013

Lothian & Edinburgh Amateur League, Challenge Cup Second Round
Tollcross Thistle 1 Lochend Amateurs 3 (att 36) at Meggetland 3G, Edinburgh

First of three games during a weekend in Scotland, and a good start. It was a surprise result, with Tollcross going well in the league's top division and Lochend a division lower.

The visitors started well, but conceded a soft goal after 12 minutes. Lochend created most of the first half's best chances, but couldn't score.

They did score early in the second half though, but soon after Tollcross wasted an opportunity to regain the lead when a penalty went high over the bar.

The tie looked to be heading for penalties (no extra time scheduled), but two late goals gave Lochend a win they deserved. Both teams played good football, and I was impressed by my first Lothian and Edinburgh AFA game.

Meggetland isn't Tollcross' usual home venue, according to the league's handbook they play at Saughton 3G, which apparently was unavailable for this tie. The main feature at Meggetland is Boroughmuir's impressive rugby ground. The 3G football pitch is separated from the rugby stadium by a hockey pitch. Spectators can stand inside the 3G "cage", with the pitch barriered on one side. The three remaining sides are officially out of bounds, but many spectators stood pitchside on the 3G surface, and there's even a few steps of terracing on the far side.
