6.30pm 19 August 2013
West Cheshire League, Division Three
St Helens Town reserves 2 Widnes Vikings reserves 2 (att 30)
This was my third choice game of the evening, after Wigan Cup games at Bickerstaffe (off as visitors Blackrod couldn't raise a side) and Winstanley St Aidens (switched to the ground of opponents Pemberton, where I'd already been).
Luckily I had enough time to get from Wigan to the Windleshaw Sports Ground, in St Helens, for fixture that wouldn't look out of place in Rugby League's Super League ... or maybe a reserve Super League.
I don't usually watch reserve sides at home, but with their first team groundsharing St Helens reserves play at a ground that, to the best of my knowledge, isn't used by another senior side. Signs and noticeboards in the wooden pavilion suggest it's home to St Helens Town Juniors.
From the pavilion and car park, the pitch runs widthways on the far side of a cricket square, and was taped off along both touchlines.
St Helens Town started the game well, hitting the post early on, but they lost their way after Widnes took the lead against the run of play. Widnes added a second goal late in the first half, and looked to be on their way to a win before two late goals, the second in stoppage time, salvaged a fortunate point for the hosts.
