Seaton Carew v Harton and Westoe Colliery Welfare

2.30pm  3 August 2013

Wearside League
Seaton Carew 4 Harton & Westoe Colliery Welfare 0 (att 38)

I don't know how much optimism Harton and Westoe had going into the new Wearside League season, but it'd have taken just 45 minutes of their opening game at Seaton Carew's Hornby Park to shatter it.

An awful opening half for the visitors saw them 4-0 down and reduced to 10 men after a red card. The second half was less eventful, but became increasingly scrappy and bad tempered before, in the final minute, Harton and Westoe lost another player to a red card.

That they finished the game with nine men was surprising only because they could easily have had one or two more dismissed. The second half's other surprise was that Seaton Carew failed to add to their first half goals.

Seaton Carew only moved to Hornby Park last season, and while it could be considered a work in progress it's more than adequate for Wearside League football. The pitch is railed off, with dugouts, but there's no cover or hard standing, and it's quite a walk from the changing rooms and clubhouse.

It seems to be the centre of Seaton Carew's sporting activities. To get to the football pitch you have to walk around the perimeter of a neat and tidy cricket ground, where a match was in progress. Rugby pitches weren't being used today, but archery was taking place, thankfully a safe distance from the football. The strong wind made football difficult enough, so it must have been a real challenge for Seaton Carew's archers.
