FC Stoneywood v New Elgin

2pm  24 August 2013

SJFA North Region, Super League
FC Stoneywood 1 New Elgin 1 (att 35)

For the first 70 minutes or so this was a disappointing game on a wet afternoon in the northern suburbs of Aberdeen.

Stoneywood had the better of few clear chances, coming closest when the visiting keeper turned a low shot onto a post, while New Elgin looked satisfied to be on course for a point.

I'd just about resigned myself to a goalless draw when, out of the blue, a great long-range strike gave New Elgin and unlikely 72nd minute lead. From that, the game was transformed, with Stoneywood pushing forward in search of an equaliser, while New Elgin looked capable of scoring on the break.

It took until stoppage time for Stoneywood to get the goal they deserved. A blow for New Elgin but I'm sure they'd have settled for a point ahead of kick off.

Stoneywood's Polo Park is a curious ground. The main stand wraps around a corner of the pitch, like a scaled down version of the stand at Swansea's old Vetch Field stadium. There's a small covered standing area, more traditionally placed on the half way line to the rear of the dugouts, and some cover in front of the changing pavilion, set back from the pitch behind the goal.

The pavilion also houses a snack bar. Before the game I had a steak pie that was so hot it took most of the skin off the top of my mouth, and I returned at half time for an ill-advised cup of boiling hot coffee that burnt my lips and destroyed any remaining skin in my mouth.

Much of the pitch surrounds are rather overgrown, but at present Polo Park's dominant feature, just beyond the perimeter fence, is the Stoneywood Sales and Marketing Suite. No doubt that provides potential purchasers with information about the homes currently being built next to the ground, and presumably soon to be built on the ground itself. I understand FC Stoneywood will get a new ground as part of the development deal.
