FA Cup, Extra Preliminary Round
Dorking Wanderers 5 Canterbury City 0 (att 127)
An historic afternoon for Dorking Wanderers as they made their FA Cup debut, and ensured there'd be at least one more tie in the competition by steamrollering a very disappointing Canterbury City.
Wanderers went ahead early, and effectively won the game with two more goals shortly before half time. They scored twice more in the second half, while Canterbury rarely threatened at all.
Dorking Wanderers, despite being based in Surrey, play in the Sussex County League. Like many clubs in the league they've worked well to turn a basic set up into a very presentable and pleasant football ground.
The Westhumble Playing Field houses both football and cricket, presumably a fixture clash was why today's Cup tie was moved to Sunday. The cricket pitch side of the football ground is out of bounds to spectators, with screens preventing free access, or a free view.
The remaining three sides feature a couple of seated stands, a snack bar, changing rooms and the other bits and pieces that turn a field into a proper football ground. With wood used in most of the construction the ground blends well with its rural surroundings.
Its setting, well out of the town and accessed from the A24 dual carriageway, and the view of nearby Box Hill, which looms over the ground, make it a lovely place to watch football, and worth the long journey.
