Portsmouth U18 v Peterborough United U18

11.15am  10 August 2013

Football League Youth Alliance, South East Conference
Portsmouth U18 1 Peterborough United U18 1 (att 40)

A consequence of Portsmouth's recent financial problems is that they've had to relocate their youth team games. Towards the end of last season, as far as I could tell, they were using local non League club grounds, but they've started this season at what I assume will be a permanent new home.

The St John's College Playing Fields, to the north of Portsmouth and hemmed in between the A27 dual carriageway and a railway line, are a world away from the luxurious Premier Academy grounds of the clubs Pompey used to mix with at this level.

The pitch appears well maintained though, and on a warm August morning it was a pleasant spot to be watching a game, after an early start and a lengthy drive down from Manchester.

I doubt the game will be among my most memorable by the time I reach the end of this season. Portsmouth went ahead after 30 minutes, slightly against the run of play but they had hit the crossbar. Peterborough's equaliser came after around an hour, and was deserved.

Otherwise there was lots of neat football, but little inspiration or imagination to lift the game out of the ordinary, as is often the case with professional youth team games. Still, after all their problems it's good that Portsmouth are still competing in the Youth Alliance.
