Lundavra v Ballachulish United at Canal Park

12 July 2011

Lochaber Welfare League
Lundavra 0 Ballachulish United 2 (att 16) at Canal Park, Caol, Fort William
A new league for me. The standard wasn't great, but there was plenty of effort and endeavour, coupled with a scenic setting, and the visitors deserved their win secured with two first half goals. The "crowd" included two Ballachulish supporters, one of whom was also a Peasedown supporter who'd travelled from Somerset for a Scottish holiday timed to coincide with the football!

Like many similar leagues, the Lochaber Welfare is struggling. It's currently down to just five teams - Lundavra, Arsenal and Fort William U17s (who all play homes games at either Canal Park or the BA Park in Fort William), Ballachulish United (who normally play in Ballachulish, but are currently in Kinlochleven while drainage work is done to their own pitch), and Mallaig (who play in Morar, a couple of miles from Mallaig). A sixth team, Celtic, have just withdrawn after Fort William's new manager ruled that his Highland League players couldn't play welfare football, thus depriving Celtic of most of their players.
