Essex Senior League
Hullbridge Sports 1 Witham Town 1 (att 55)
£6 admission incl prog
With not much choice today I elected for a lengthy trip to visit my final remaining Essex Senior League ground - just 25 years after I started the league with a visit to Eton Manor.
It wasn't a particularly memorable game, but Witham looked fairly good, and really should have won this, especially after leading. Both goals, Witham's in the first half and Hullbridge's in the second, were the result of a long ball and defenders lacking the necessary speed of legs and of thought.
The venue is basic, a couple of small Arena-style prefab stands either side of a small covered standing area, and the mesh fence that encloses the ground does little to deter anyone who'd rather watch from outside than pay admission. That said, there was a decent paying attendance, including a fair few from Witham.

Hi Steve,
ReplyDeleteYou say in the post that your first game was 25-years ago at Eton Manor. That would have been in 1986, do you remember who they played as I likely would have been playing.
Regards
Gerry
Hi Gerry, it was 20 May 1986, and Eton Manor lost 5-0 at home to Maldon Town.
ReplyDeleteThanks Steve.
ReplyDeleteI played for Eton Manor between November 1981 and May 1989 and throughout 1986 and 1987 I was in the first team, but I'm not actually sure I played that night.
Our manager had been sacked after the May Bank Holiday game, another disastrous performance. So the club just fulfilled the fixtures and the players from all the teams were mixed and matched to suit the availability after May Day
Did you watch any other Eton Manor games?
Regards
Gerry
