Y Glannau v Cerrigydrudion

2.30pm  14 August 2021

North Wales Coast East League, Division One
Y Glannau 2 Cerrigydrudion 5 (att 12)

You won't find Y Glannau on a map, although I guess you might if you know it's Welsh for 'the shore'. The club was founded to help promote the language, and began life with Welsh-speaking players from the along the North Walian coast.

English speakers play for the club too, and visitors Cerrigydrudion seemed to have as many, if nor more, Welsh speakers in their line up for this fixture in the fifth tier of Welsh football.

The game was a slow burner. The home side's well-taken opener was the only goal, and a rare highlight, of a scrappy first half.

Things livened up a lot after the break. Cerrigydrudion, going well in the league, equalised and then a few minutes later went in front. The lead didn't last long though, as an early contender for my 'goal of the season', a first-time strike from distance that flew beyond the keeper, made it 2-2.

That was as good as it got for Y Glannau. Cerrigydrudion moved up a gear or two and the home side couldn't match them. Three goals gave the visitors a deserved win, albeit by a flattering margin.

Y Glannau's home ground is a few miles inland from the North Wales shoreline, in St Asaph. They use a pitch at the local school-cum-sport centre. There's no facilities, and the grass was a bit too long for flowing football, but even on a drizzly afternoon it was a pleasant enough venue.
