Cheshire League, League One
Vulcan 1 Holmes Chapel 2 (att 48)
It's taken Vulcan a long time to get back home. I saw them play at the Vulcan sports ground in 2000, and since then the club has endured some nomadic years playing on school and park pitches.
They moved while the site of the former Vulcan foundry in Newton-le-Willows was redeveloped for housing. The development included new sports facilities, and now they're complete the club has returned.
For pedantic groundhoppers (like me) it's worth noting that the new football pitch doesn't overlap the location of the old one, although by my reckoning they're not far apart.
The new facility is excellent. The pitch is enclosed, and changing rooms are in a pavilion that also includes a bar and a serving hatch for dispensing drinks and snacks.
The pavilion is raised slightly above pitch level, and in front of it hard standing and a few benches make it a good viewing area. The rest of the ground is open, but dugouts, advertising hoardings and club signage make a neat and attractive venue.
On the pitch the game seemed a good standard for the Cheshire League's middle division, although goal chances were few and far between. Vulcan went ahead after about an hour, but Holmes Chapel were level within two minutes.
A draw seemed a likely and fair outcome based on the balance of play, but Holmes Chapel unexpectedly won the game by forcing home a winner in stoppage time.
