Bethesda Rovers v Waunfawr

6pm  14 August 2021

North Wales Coast West League, Division One
Bethesda Rovers 1 Waunfawr 6 (att 52)

A third successive Saturday watching football in North Wales hadn't been my plan until I was alerted that Bethesda Rovers were playing at the unusual time of 6pm. The chance to see a second game too good to miss.

Rovers are a newly-formed club, and it's fair to say their opening matches have been something of a baptism of fire. This was their third league fixture, and their best result so far.

Hopefully they won't be too discouraged and will keep going, as it's good to see new teams bucking the trend of declining numbers playing grassroots football.

Despite a disastrous spell between the 10th and 20th minutes, when Waunfawr scored four times, they put up a decent fight against one of the division's front-runners.

Having gone 4-0 down Bethesda Rovers got the game's next goal, reducing their deficit before half time. They had chances in the second half was well, although by then the away side had eased off, settling for just two more goals.

When I saw a Bethesda Rovers team had joined the league I assumed they'd groundshare with Bethesda Athletic, but the new side actually shares the ground of the town's rugby club.

They play on the second pitch, with football goals placed in front of rugby posts. As well as hiring out a pitch to footballers, the rugby club also allows campers on the site during the summer. It makes sense, with Bethesda being on the edge of Snowdonia, and on the evidence of the number of tents around the pitch it's a popular spot.
