Richmond Town v Darlington Railway Athletic

7pm  18 August 2021

Wearside League, Division One
Richmond Town 0 Darlington Railway Athletic 4 (att 68)

Richmond Town were top of the league going into this game, so such a heavy defeat was something of an upset.

It remains early days in the season of course and teams below them, including Darlington Railway Athletic, have games in hand. But the visitors scored all four goals in a first half when they could easily have added several more.

More than once it took good goalkeeping to keep the score down, and the frame of the goal was hit at least twice. It was an incisive and clinical display by Railway Athletic.

As is often the case following a one-sided first half, the second period passed largely without incident. Richmond aren't a bad side and had they got an early goal back they might have been able to chip away at the deficit, but their breakthrough never came.

Richmond Town moved during last season from an iconic but basic venue, in the scenic shadow of Richmond Castle, to a more functional newly-built home in the grounds of Richmond School.

It's a 3G pitch with a spectator area running most of the length of one side. It's floodlit, which might make progression to the Northern League possible if the necessary spectator accommodation can be added, but it suffers by comparison to its predecessor.
