Runcorn Sports v Rainhill Town reserves

6.30pm  6 August 2021

West Cheshire League, Division Two
Runcorn Sports 6 Rainhill Town reserves 0 (att 84)

Runcorn Sports were undefeated in their truncated debut season in the West Cheshire League, earning promotion to the league's second division. This result suggests they may be tough to beat again.

Of course you can't read too much into an opening fixture, especially when it's on a Friday evening in summer, but after an even opening 20 minutes or so Runcorn dominated the match.

They scored three in each half, and although Rainhill had chances and were a little unfortunate not to score, the hosts' winning margin could easily have been wider.

Cricket looks to be the main sport at the Runcorn Sports Club, which might explain why the footballers have some early season Friday evening games. From the changing rooms and clubhouse the route to the football pitch skirts the boundary of a cricket pitch that looks well cared for.

The football pitch is beyond a fence, and looks like it doubles as the playing field of an adjacent school. It's just a pitch, although that all that's necessary at this level, and its roped off to keep spectators in check.
