South Liverpool v Ashton Town

7.45pm  4 August 2021

North West Counties League, Division One North
South Liverpool 4 Ashton Town 2 (att 304)

Twenty-four hours after visiting Burscough I went to other ground I needed to recomplete the North West Counties League, that of newly-promoted South Liverpool.

It's a welcome return to this level of football for South Liverpool, who have endured some tough years after losing their old Holly Park ground 30 years ago. I saw them at two of the home grounds they used in the intervening years, playing in lower leagues in front of just a few dozen diehards.

So it was good to see a large crowd squeezed into pitch one at the Jericho Lane Sports Hub. I was last at Jericho Lane in January 2020, for a game on pitch three, but South's pitch has been developed to meet the criteria for the North West Counties League.

There's a seated stand, behind one goal, and a covered standing area along one side. There's also a base that's been laid, suggesting third piece of spectator accommodation is imminent.

Being based at one of Liverpool's football hubs means getting into the ground involves registering for a QR code that unlocks a turnstyle. I'd registered for my previous visit, and the QR code on my phone worked fine.

Both teams had lost their opening fixture, but it was the home side who got their first points of the season after a lively and enjoyable game.

South Liverpool had to come from behind to draw level twice, once in each half. Their second equaliser was a penalty, and that swung the momentum in their favour. They went in front and, unlike Ashton, managed to hold onto, and extend, their lead.
