Goonhavern Athletic v Mawnan

3pm  2 April 2022

Cornwall Combination
Goonhavern Athletic 0 Mawnan 4 (att 18)

It's been a few years since I last watched a match in the Cornwall Combination, and in that time many of its leading clubs have departed for 'step seven' football in the new St Piran League.

It may have diluted the quality somewhat, but on the other hand it has allowed some less familiar names to step up. Mawnan are one of them, and they played some impressive football for an easy win at Goonhavern.

Mawnan never looked in trouble after taking an early lead, and the home side were fortunate not to let in more than the two goals they conceded in each half.

Goonhavern Athletic have played at this level previously, and even had a brief spell in the old South Western League. Their Reen Manor Park ground, between the village of Goonhavern and the seaside town of Perranporth, reflects that.

The pitch is fully enclosed, and seats under overhanging clubhouse roof provide a small stand. There are dugouts, and pitchside advertising boards help make it a neat venue.
