Wearside League, Division One
Darlington Town 6 Washington United 2 (att 28)
A challenge at this time of year can be finding fixtures where clubs have something to play for. Darlington Town probably won't win the Wearside League, but they needed three points to keep pressure on the leaders.
They got off to the best possible start, going ahead after just two minutes. But any thoughts that would set them up for an easy afternoon were quickly dispelled by a Washington United equaliser two minutes later.
The visitors soaked up a lot of pressure and looked dangerous on the break, while the home side grew frustrated. A penalty was the ideal chance for Darlington to regain the advantage, but it was saved. Then not long later Washington scored again.
Darlington Town needed a positive start to the second half. They got it by scoring after two minutes, then scored again two minutes after that, going ahead thanks to a penalty that was more successful than their earlier effort.
This time Washington United had no answer, and more goals followed as Darlington played some good football. The win keeps them two points behind leaders Chester-le-Street United with one game each left to play.
Regardless of where they finish, Darlington Town's promotion hopes will be on hold until their new ground is ready. At present they use a basic artificial pitch at the Eastbourne Sports Complex, but work will soon start nearby on a venue that will be suitable for the Northern League.
