Mulbarton Wanderers v Boston Town

3pm  10 August 2019

FA Cup, Extra Preliminary Round
Mulbarton Wanderers 0 Boston Town 0 (att 310)

The FA Cup may have lost a lot of its sheen but it remains a big deal to clubs who begin the long road to Wembley in August.

It certainly meant a lot to Mulbarton Wanderers. The Norfolk club were making their debut in the competition and pulled out all the stops for their big day. They were rewarded by villagers who turned out in force to support them.

Sadly very strong winds prevented the game from reaching any great heights, but step six Mulbarton were worth a draw against a side that plays a level higher. Boston will of course be favourites for the replay, and might have won at the first attempt if it wasn't for some fine second half saves by the home keeper.

Mulbarton were one of a number of clubs who seized the opportunity the step up to step six football when an additional division of the Eastern Counties League was formed last summer. They finished third last season, high enough to earn an FA Cup place, and I expect they'll challenge for promotion this time as well.

They play at Mulberry Park, an excellent example of a well-maintained village football ground. There's a neat but small seated stand, floodlights (obligatory for the FA Cup), a tea bar and two sides of hard standing.

Grassed areas, behind one goal and on the far side opposite the stand, are technically out of bounds. However, with a large crowd in the ground a sensible blind eye was turned and spectators were able to line all four sides of the pitch.

  1. Cheers Steve for the write up...

MWFC is starting to go places - the chairman and management team and volunteers have really got things moving.

If a league promotion occurs then next season a village team will be playing a city team!
