Arriva Bangor v Llandegfan

7pm  30 August 2019

Anglesey League, Elias Cup, First Round
Arriva Bangor 4 Llandegfan 1 (att 48)

This was only the second time I've watched Anglesey League football, but the prospect of an extra game on a Friday night was enough to tempt me to travel to Bangor.

Bangor of course isn't actually in Anglesey, but since the demise of the Caernarfon League the competition's boundaries have been extended a little, and in effect it's now a second division of the Gwynedd League.

Arriva Bangor play on a 3G pitch at Bangor University's Treborth Playing Fields, which is about as close to Anglesey as you can get without crossing the Menai Strait. The same pitch is also used by newly-formed Bangor 1876, a breakaway club formed by supporters unhappy at the way Bangor City is being run.

The artificial surface is a recent addition to the facilities at Treborth, which also include a floodlit and enclosed grass football pitch. The 3G has barriered spectator areas behind the goal nearest the entrance to the 'cage' and along the far side, where there's also a seated stand.

The stand didn't get much use though, as most spectators chose to watch this cup tie from the opposite side where the dugouts are situated.

It was quite a decent attendance for football at this level, which was good as the club were raising money for an injured player by charging £2 for admission, which also included entry into a raffle.

The game got off to a lively start with chances at both ends but no goals. We waited 20 minutes for an Arriva goal and then four came along at once. Well, almost at once, they were scored in the space of 10 minutes.

With the outcome settled and the conditions getting blustery, the second half was scrappy compared to the first. Llandegfan deserved the late goal they got back, but it was nothing more than a consolation. A late red card, for a second booking, meant the home side finished with 10 men.

A notable aspect of the line ups, and almost certainly a first in any game I've watched, was the inclusion of a grandfather and his grandson playing alongside each other for Arriva Bangor.

The 3G pitch isn't on Google Maps yet but here's a link to the location
