United Counties League, Division One
Melton Town 4 Burton Park Wanderers 0 (att 105)
Melton Town was the only option I had for a competitive game on a new ground after the midday kick off at Peel Croft in Burton. Despite some fears about the traffic I made it with 10 minutes to spare.
After a game at a historic venue, this was a more modern football ground. SignRight Park, at Melton Sports Village, has only been open a few years and I think it's intended as a temporary home for Melton Town.
It ticks all the boxes for this level of football, but does have a temporary feel to it. Changing rooms, toilets, a snack bar and committee room are all behind the goal nearest the entrance, along with some picnic tables. There's a neat seated stand to one side, and I'm sure they whole lot could easily be picked up and transported to an alternative site.
The pitch itself is fully enclosed, as it has to be for 'step six' football, with hard standing on two sides. On a warm and sunny afternoon, for the first day of Melton's competitive season, it looked great, and it was good a see a good turnout of supporters.
It can be tricky to read too much into early season form, but the ease with which Melton won this suggests they could better last season's third place finish. Burton Park Wanderers had won their season opener last week by 4-0, yet Melton were 3-0 up by half time and added their fourth just after the break.
