6.30pm 14 August 2019
York League, Premier Division
Hemingbrough United 1 Thorpe United 1 (att 43)
Hemingbrough United have returned to their village ground after a couple of seasons groundsharing at nearby Selby Town, and welcomed local rivals Thorpe for the first competitive fixture back home.
It was a well-contested local derby, and while the match wasn't a thriller there was plenty to enjoy. York League games are usually a good standard, at least in the top division, and this was no exception.
Both goals were in the first half. Thorpe looked the better side from the start, and deserved the goal that put them ahead, but they couldn't hold onto their advantage as Hemingbrough got back into the game.
There were chances at both ends in the second half, but no more goals and on balance a draw was a fair outcome.
Hemingbrough United's pitch is squeezed into the edge of the village sports ground, where cricket looks to be the dominant sport. Both touchlines are roped off, with one side bordering a busy bowls club, and there's a pair of permanent dugouts.
The pavilion is angled towards the cricket square, but was open to serve hot drinks at half time. Players change in pitch-side portable cabins, recent additions and necessary before the club was able to return to the ground.
