Trefelin BGC v Bridgend Street

2.30pm  14 April 2018

Welsh League, Division Three
Trefelin Boys and Girls Club 0 Bridgend Street 3 (att 105)

I was looking for a game that would allow me time to get to a six o'clock kick off in Cardiff, and Trefelin fitted the bill nicely. Not only was it one of the final four Welsh League grounds I was yet to visit, but it looked likely to be a decent game.

The home side went into the match defending an unbeaten league record, and in a two-way tussle with Swansea University at the top of the division. Bridgend Street were third in the table, having lost only twice themselves.

The game lived up to its billing, with the Cardiff-based visitors ending Trefelin's undefeated run thanks to one first half goal, and two more in the second period as the hosts chased the game.

It might have been different had a goal from Trefelin's well-worked free kick early in the second half not been ruled out, controversially, for offside. From where I was standing I don't know if the referee made the right call, but Trefelin's protests were vociferous.

Both these times are likely to promoted though, along with Swansea University. Trefelin's Ynys Park ground, just outside Port Talbot in Cwmafan, is good for this level of Welsh football. It's fully enclosed, with a nice clubhouse, a covered standing area and a footpath around much of the pitch.

There are also fine views of the surrounding valley, and it was a great place to watch a game of football on an afternoon when, for the first time this season, it felt quite spring like.

  1. well I was also at this game and the disallowed goal was definitely offside because the final pass was rolled a yard or 2 forward. A shame because it was an excellently worked free kick. I was stood in line with the move and the home supporters had to admit it was offside. It was an enjoyable day out on a glorious afternoon. I was very impressed with bridgend st who were very well organised, clinical, fit and strong and all in all were a more powerful unit than Trefelin. The home team were outsmarted by the visitors and were frustrated by the complete dominance of former Carmarthen Town captain Paul Fowler in central defence. The last time I saw Fowler playing for the Old Gold he was a ball winning midfield general but he now seems equally as comfortable in defence. He was simply too big and strong for anything that Trefelin could offer. I was personally baffled as to how Trefelin finished the game with 11 men. Their goalkeeper Stanton was a constant source of verbal abuse and threats for the entirety of the game bellowing such things as punch him in the face and break his legs. More surprising was there didn’t appear to be any instructions from their manager Richard Ryan or anyone else for him to behave in the proper manner. Strangely the match referee Mr G Webber decided to ignore the constant foul mouth tirade. Why ? I don’t know but I’ve seen many players sent off this season for committing less than a quarter of the issues Stanton caused. In plane simple terms I found him distasteful and immature. My 12 year old son was constantly asking me why he wasn’t having a red card. I couldn’t help him with the answer. Apart from the mentioned abuse it was entertaining. The home team number 6 was their best performer while Fowler was the best player on view with the Bridgend number 10 not far behind with some crafty skills
