Cardiff Hibernian v AFC Bargoed

6pm  14 April 2018

South Wales Alliance League, Division Two
Cardiff Hibernian 2 AFC Bargoed 2 (att 197)

I admit that a match between two of the bottom three sides, in the lowest of the South Wales Alliance League's three divisions, didn't seem that enticing.

Of course that didn't matter as being a Saturday evening kick off - part of the south Wales 'groundhop' weekend allowing people like me to get to extra games and grounds - it made sense to be there. It also doubled as a memorial match for the home club's secretary, who sadly died recently, so it was fitting there was a large crowd.

It was a game were effort and endeavour were more important than skill, although neither side were helped by the state of the pitch. AFC Bargoed started well and looked to be heading for a win when they established a 2-0 lead.

Cardiff Hibernian pulled one back before half time, and got just reward for their efforts, both on and off the pitch, when a brilliantly well-taken goal gave them a stoppage time equaliser.

The venue was a pitch at what was, from 1855 until 1939, Ely Racecourse. The horses are long gone, but it remains a recreation area with many football pitches. One of them is railed off, with a pair of dugouts, and is home to Cardiff Hibernian.
