6.15pm 4 April 2018
Altrincham and District Amateur League, Broadheath Central Cup
Flixton Juniors 7 Govan Athletic 'A' 2 (att 5)
The wet weather put paid to a planned trip into West Yorkshire, but I got positive vibes from both clubs that this game was expected to be on, and sure enough Flixton's pitch was surprisingly good condition.
They play at Weathercock Farm, which sounds like a rural venue but is in fact a playing field surrounded by houses in Sale. It's a pleasant place to watch a game though, particularly when there's plenty of goals.
In a very entertaining first half Flixton twice went in front both both times Govan struck back to equalise. The visitors' second goal was magnificent, the scorer's waltz through a multitude of opponents before netting reminded me of Maradona's second goal against England in the 1986 World Cup.
But, unlike Maradona, he couldn't he couldn't win the game on his own, and Flixton went back in front before half time. The second period remained close until the home side scored their fourth, after which they ran away with it.
The final score was harsh on Govan, who field their third team in the Altrincham League as their firsts and reserves play Manchester League football.
