York League, Bryan Shearer Memorial Trophy
Wigginton Grasshoppers 0 York League 4 (att 62)
The biggest change since my last game at Wigginton Grasshoppers was the reason for a return. A smart pavilion has been built on part of what was the main pitch, and so the club have made the shortest of moves, with the former second pitch now the new main one.
Not everyone would count that as a new ground (and non-groundhoppers will be baffled why anyone should care), but my self-imposed rules mean a different pitch requires another visit.
Not that going to Wigginton, a suburb just north of York, is any hardship, especially on a warm and sunny evening for what is, I think, an annual curtain-raiser to the York League season.
The Bryan Shearer Trophy pits the previous season's champions against the league's representative team. Like the FA's Community Shield it falls somewhere between pre-season friendly and a competitive fixture.
Fortunately this was more the latter than the former. I don't know how many different clubs the York League side was drawn from, but I was impressed by their football and surprised how well they played together as team. The rep side does have its own Twitter account though, so I assume it has regular fixtures.
They won thanks to two goals in each half, the fourth from the penalty spot. Wigginton had their moments, but whenever a home goal looked likely the league's keeper kept them out.
Wiggington's current pitch, parallel and immediately adjacent to where the old one was, is neatly roped off and has a pair of dugouts. It's close to the new pavilion, which is a good addition to a decent set up.
