Manchester League, Premier Division
Walshaw Sports Club 3 Heywood St James 2 (att 100)
Walshaw appear to have relocated their first team games this season, from their sports club base to a pitch at nearby Elton High School.
The move makes sense. Cricket is the dominant sport at their traditional home, so early and late season games often have to be played elsewhere, and the school's artificial pitch means weather-related postponements are unlikely.
The only downside is the capacity at their new home. The caged 3G pitch has a spectator area running about two-thirds of one touchline, but there are sections of high fencing and, with no dugouts, the coaches and substitutes were all pitchside. With a large crowd present, getting a good view was a challenge.
It was a game worth watching though, and a good advert for the top division of the Manchester League. Walshaw always had the edge, but the outcome was less comfortable than seemed likely after they took a 2-0 first half lead.
Heywood St James pulled a goal back around mid-way through the second period. Walshaw looked to have settled their nerves, and the match, with a third goal five minutes from time, but then conceded again moments later. Despite the late scare they held on to win.
Balanced report thanks
