Manchester Central v Elton Vale

3pm 13 August 2022

Manchester League, Division One
Manchester Central 3 Elton Vale 1 (att 15)

Manchester Central were a big deal in the early 1930s. If Wikipedia is to be believed they were only denied a place in the Football League because Manchester United feared the impact it would have on their crowds and finances.

The current club's only connection is a revival of the historic name. As most of the spectators at this match seemed to be supporting the visitors it's doubtful the current Manchester United will see them as any threat, although I gather they do have a more significant following online.

Central are a bit of a gift to groundhoppers, as they move home venues on a regular basis. This season they're using an artificial pitch at the Seashell Trust, a charity which supports children, young people and adults with learning difficulties.

It's in Cheadle Hulme, which rather stretches the definition of Manchester Central, and is a typical 3G set up. There's a wide area for spectators running the length of one side, and changing rooms adjacent to the caged pitch.

It was almost too hot to watch football, so credit to both teams for providing an entertaining game in very difficult conditions. Two early goals put Central in control, but they had a scare when Elton Vale pulled one back with a second half penalty.

The home side always had the edge, but failed to convert chances that would have made the game safe. They finally clinched it with a third goal about 10 minutes from time.
