Abergele v Penrhyn Bay

2.30pm 6 August 2022

North Wales Coast East League, Division One
Abergele 7 Penrhyn Bay 4 (att 27)

Abergele won this division last season, but were denied promotion as their Dinorben Field ground lacked the facilities required for a higher level.

Based on the first 40 minutes of this match they'll probably win the league again. They scored seven goals and could easily have got to double figures.

But Abergele's performance in the 50 minutes that followed suggests they might not have it so easy. They allowed Penrhyn Bay a consolation just before half time, and then never got going in the second period.

It's not unusual for a team to ease off once a match is comprehensively won, but Abergele didn't so much as take their foot off the pedal as go into reverse. A resurgent Penrhyn Bay scored three more in the game's final quarter.

Abergele are apparently seeking an alternative venue that would allow the club to progress. Their current home is a basic playing field, roped off on one touchline, just off the A55 North Wales Expressway.
