Melksham v Parkwyddn

11am  13 June 2021

Eccles Sunday League, Division Three
Melksham 0 Parkwyddn 3 (att 19)

I don't generally watch Sunday league football, but I make exceptions for summer competitions and the Eccles Sunday League switched from winter to summer football a few years ago.

It's good to see the league back, and with three divisions, after the disruption of the last 18 months or so. It was also good to spot some new venues, including one I'd not been to previously.

The Duncan Matheson Playing Fields have been under threat, with plans to build houses on them, but their status now looks more secure and local club Swinton FC has invested in the site.

The ground is being used by Melksham for home games in the Eccles Sunday League. They use the pitch that's closest to the entrance, car park and the austere-looking pavilion building.

For the lowest tier of the league this was a surprising good quality game. The visitors took a first half lead, and survived the loss of their keeper, to injury, to add two more goals in the second half.

The sides were well matched, and finishing was the biggest difference between them. It was a very competitive encounter, and got a bit too competitive towards the end when a brawl ended with a red card for the hosts.
