Wensleydale League
Catterick Garrison Football Centre 1 Richmond Town reserves 2 (att 37)
My only previous taste of Wensleydale League football was a cup final at Carperby more than 20 years ago. I was tempted to this match as the league is completing its season and running to the end of June.
It was Richmond Town's final fixture, and they got the three points they needed to make sure they can finish no lower than second. Challengers Unicorn can now only overtake them on goal difference.
When they went ahead in the second minute it looked as if they'd win this comfortably, and perhaps boost their goal difference as well, but Catterick Garrison made it a difficult afternoon for Richmond.
It remained 1-0 into the second half, and when Cattrick equalised, mid-way through the half, it was no surprise. The home team had been on top, and deserved their goal.
Being pegged back spurred Richmond Town into upping their game. They were rewarded with a penalty about 15 minutes from the end. It was scored and they held their lead to the end.
There's no shortage of sports facilities in Catterick Garrison. I've previously seen Teesside League and Wearside League matches in other parts of the army-dominated town.
Catterick Garrison Football Centre play on a pitch off Smuts Road. It lacks the scenic setting of some Wensleydale League venues, but it's a good facility. The standard of football was higher than I'd expected, and I won't leave it another 20 years before I next see a match in this league.
