West Lancashire League, Premier Division
Southport Hesketh 1 Hesketh Bank 2 (att 75)
Is this the first or second time I've seen Southport Hesketh this season? Exactly a month before this game I saw Fleetwood Hesketh play a pre-season friendly, but since then they've got a new name, and moved into a new ground.
The old name was always a bit confusing, as the club are firmly based in Southport rather than Fleetwood. The new ground is off Bankfield Lane, in the Churchtown area, and at present has an ageing changing room block and a pitch that has dugouts and is newly, and neatly, railed off.
Being the first game at Bankfield Lane it was no surprise that the fixture attracted a large turnout of fellow groundhoppers. We were treated to a decent game, in a league where the quality of football rarely disappoints.
Visitors Hesketh Bank (despite the similar names the clubs are unconnected) scored an early opening goal. Southport Hesketh were level by half time, but the away side scored the only goal of the second period.
Defeat was a little harsh on Southport Hesketh but I imagine they'll do okay as the season progresses, and it'll be interesting to see how their new ground progresses as well.
