Oakham United v Buckingham Town

7.45pm  1 August 2015

United Counties League, Division One
Oakham United 5 Buckingham Town 2 (att 341)

An historic occasion for Oakham United, as they staged their first game since their elevation to the United Counties League. According to the match programme it was also a significant day for their county ... the first United Counties fixture ever staged in Rutland.

Oakham's rise has been made possible, in part, by their move to a new venue. Sterling Meadow (named in honour of sponsors) looks to be a work in progress, at least I hope so, as at present there's spectator access on just one side and one end.

At least the covered standing area, made from wood, looks different to the identikit prefab stands that infest so many newly-built non-League stadiums, and there does seem to be a buzz around the club that appears to be upwardly mobile.

Oakham will be more than satisfied with the outcome of their debut at "step six". They took a while to get going, but took control in the second half to run out comfortable winners against a Buckingham side who must look enviously at a club with a new ground in their home side town, as they prepare for another season exiled in Milton Keynes.
