Holt United v Aylsham

7.30pm  14 August 2015

Anglian Combination, Division One
Holt United 0 Aylsham 7 (att 65)

I always feel a little sorry for clubs who get thrashed in their opening game of the season, when weeks of preparation and planning are left in tatters after just 90 minutes.

There's a long way to go though, so hopefully Holt will have better displays than this as the season progresses. For their part Aylsham, who scored three in the first half and four in the second, played some fine football and look like promotion challengers.

Pre-match preparation going awry was something that also happened to me on my trip to Norfolk. I'd left home in what I thought was plenty of time to make it to Mattishall for their 6.30 kick off, but a series of long delays meant a change of plan, and a later kick off for a game under floodlights at Holt.

The club have a decent ground. Some building work is in evidence at what is already a nice clubhouse, and there are two main football pitches, either side of a cricket pitch. The first team pitch is railed along both touchlines and roped at both ends, and there's a sturdy shelter on the far side, with a few chairs inside for fans who prefer to sit.
