Point of Ayr v Venture Community

2.30pm  5 April 2014

Welsh National League (Wrexham Area), Division One
Point of Ayr 6 Venture Community 1 (att 20)

This is a league I normally reserve for midweek matches, but while the North Wales village of Ffynnongroyw is just too far to be in easy reach in rush hour traffic, it was the ideal location to head to after a morning match on the Wirral.

It's a former mining area, the club were formerly called Point of Ayr Welfare, their badge features a miner's lamp and their nickname is the Colliers. I assume the Recreation Ground, where they play, is what's left of the miners' welfare sports ground.

These days it's an enclosed pitch with adjacent changing rooms and a slightly raised grass bank on one side. A few advertising boards are attached to the fence on the far side, which is adjacent to Ffynnongroyw's bypass.

Point of Ayr are top of the league in their first season at this level, although they'll be looking over their shoulder at local rivals FC Nomads of Connah's Quay, who if they won today will still have a 100% winning record but a sizeable fixture backlog.

Wrexham-based Venture Community where unlikely to pose much of a challenge to the Colliers, and the visitors' ill-disciplined performance resulted in a predictably heavy defeat. Point of Ayr scored three times in each half, two of them penalties, while Venture's goal always had the look of a consolation, despite being scored in the first half.
