Kelsall v Ellesmere Port Town U23

6.30pm 12 August 2025

West Cheshire League, Division Three
Kelsall 1 Ellesmere Port Town U23 0 (att 40)

Kelsall are newcomers to the West Cheshire League this season, having stepped up from local football in the Chester and Wirral League.

They've made a solid start to life at this level, this being their second win from their opening trio of matches. At the weekend they scored nine against Helsby's under 23 side, but this was a more hard fought win against Ellesmere Port Town's youngsters.

The visitors had maximum points from their two opening fixtures, and there wasn't much between the sides. It remained goalless well into the second half, although both teams had hit the crossbar when it looked easier to score.

Kelsall eventually broke the deadlock with about 20 minutes left. A well-struck shot that the keeper couldn't stop despite getting a hand to it. It wasn't the greatest of games, although a humid evening and a hard sun-baked pitch didn't help.

There's not a lot a club at this level can do about the pitch in this weather, but beyond that Kelsall's ambitiously-named Field of Dreams ground, just outside the village, is a good one. It's enclosed, with plenty of parking and a wooden pavilion in a corner that provides some cover.

Spectators are sort of restricted to one side, unofficially at least, which is partly railed and partly roped off some way back from the touchline.

Dugouts face each other across the pitch. The wooden 'away' one looks like a repurposing of what was originally a pair, probably installed at time when each one only had to be large enough to accommodate a manager, substitute and a 'trainer' armed with a bucket and sponge. A pop-up temporary dugout serves the home side.
