Montagu Cup, Round of 16
Hickleton Harriers 1 The Gate Inn 4 (att 40)
The Montagu Cup's last 16 phase gave me a choice of new grounds to visit, and I chose Hickelton on the basis that it looked an interesting venue.
Unlike some of the Sunday league teams that take part in 'the Mont', Hickleton have their own ground. To find it you have to know which unsigned track to take off a road just outside the village.
The track leads to a gate, beyond which is a enclosed football pitch. There's space for parking around the perimeter and, surprisingly for this level, hot food and drink available from a snack bar.
Hickleton Harriers won the third tier of the Mexborough and District Sunday League last season, whereas The Gate Inn are a new team. Apparently they're a new team with pedigree though, and will make their debut in the top division of Rotherham's Sunday league.
They moved into the quarter finals of the Montagu Cup with relative ease, although the teams were level at half time. Gate had deservedly gone ahead about midway through the opening half, but conceded an equaliser shortly before the break.
Two quick Gate goals early in the second period set them up for a more comfortable half, and when they add a fourth there was no way back for the home side.
