West Cheshire League, Division Two
Great Sutton 2 Hooton 3 (att 48)
I visited Great Sutton at their Netherpool Road ground, in Ellesmere Port, last season. It was a season that ended with promotion to the West Cheshire League's middle division, and they've kicked off 2025/26 at a new venue.
Coronation Recreation Ground, in Chester but close to Ellesmere Port, is described on the club's social media as a 'short term temporary home'. I understand they're playing here pending the completion of a new ground.
It's a pleasant public park, with an open pitch that was roped off along part of each touchline. The changing rooms and a small car park are a short stroll away.
The venue may have been in Chester but this was a local derby between two Ellesmere Port teams, and it was a feisty and hard-fought encounter.
Hooton had the perfect start with an early goal, then doubled their lead moments before half time thanks to a volley from distance that couldn't have been better struck, and flew into the top corner of the net.
Great Sutton came back into the game after the break. They pulled a goal back just a few minutes after the restart, and then levelled with a fine goal of their own. At that point they had momentum but it was a game that could have gone either way.
Hooton held on, and were celebrating by the end as they got what turned out to be the decisive goal. Great Sutton threw everything into trying to get a late equaliser, but to no avail.
