Montagu Cup, First Round
Edlington Top Club 13 Pocket 1 (att 67)
The Montagu Cup has become a regular feature my early season groundhopping, providing competitive football on Sunday mornings in South Yorkshire.
The historic competition is open to Saturday and Sunday sides, although the latter tend to dominate the entry list. It's a growing list, although disappointingly several of this year's scheduled first round ties were awarded as walkovers.
I guess the enthusiasm of entering 'the Mont' isn't always easy to sustain when it comes to getting side together for a tricky away tie on a summer Sunday morning.
Credit then to Mexborough Sunday League side Pocket, who were always likely to struggle against the Doncaster and District Sunday League champions Edlington Top Club.
The visitors hit the underside of the Top Club crossbar in the opening moments, but the home side recovered from that early scare to move comfortably into next weekend's 'round of 16'.
It was 5-0 by half time, and 13-0 before Pocket gained some consolation by breaking forward to score the game's final goal. It's difficult to tell from a tie like this, but Top Club, who take their name from a local social club, must be among the favourites to take the trophy.
They play at Edlington Recreation Ground, a neat venue with a fully railed off pitch adjacent to a pavilion that houses the changing rooms. A few strategically placed benches and picnic tables give spectators the option of sitting.
UPDATE: So it turns out Edlington Top Club aren't into the next round after all. Apparently they fielded an ineligible player, which was realised early on and would explain a substitution, soon after kick off, that I put down to injury.
