Ealandians v Shire Academics

10 May 2012
Yorkshire Amateur League, Senior A Division
Ealandians 1 Shire Academics 2 (att 11)

My first experience of the Yorkshire Amateur League, and on the whole it was a good introduction and I'm sure I'll see more games in it in future.

The standard was good, although with little at stake it felt very much like an end of season encounter. The visitors' late arrival meant the game started well after 7pm, and was reduced to two 35 minute halves with dark rain clouds threatening, but thankfully not delivering, a second successive wet night in Yorkshire.

The visitors win, in this their final game of the season, lifted them off the bottom of the division. Perhaps that spur was the reason they showed a bit more determination than their mid table hosts.

Shire went ahead with a well taken first half goal, before Ealandians levelled thanks to a second half free kick. The visitors winner was another good finish, a player through on goal keeping his head and calmly rounding the keeper before scoring.

Ealandians play at Elland Cricket Club. As a cricket ground it's very impressive, and while the football facilities are limited to just a pitch, it has an enclosed feel thanks to the walls of the cricket ground and the clubhouse buildings.
