Irish League, Championship One
Warrenpoint Town 2 Harland and Wolff Welders 1 (att 113)
After driving through heavy rain much of the way from Galway I was relieved to find the game was still on when I arrived at Warrenpoint's ground on the Upper Dromore Road, on the outskirts of the County Down town.
Warrenpoint joined the Irish League last season, and won promotion from Championship Two at the first attempt. Early signs are that this season will be one of consolidation, and they had the visitors' ill discipline to thank for this win.
Welders started strongly and it looked just a matter of time before they'd take the lead, but it was the home side who scored first, against the run of play.
The outcome was effectively decided in the minute either side of half time. In the final act of the first half a Welders player was red carded for his second booking, and in the opening moment of the second Warrenpoint doubled their lead.
Another red card saw Welders later reduced to nine men, but even with such a numerical disadvantage they scored the game's only remaining goal, and might even have equalised.
The main feature of Warrenpoint's ground is a new-looking and good-sized main stand, although much of the rest is just flat grassed standing areas, which were rather muddy.
Ground no: 3,652
