Bonar Bridge v Orkney

12.45pm 15 April 2023

North Caledonian League
Bonar Bridge 0 Orkney 4 (att 30)

This wasn't my first attempt to see a game at Bonar Bridge. Previous journeys north to do so have ended with diversions to Alness and to Huntly, so I was relieved to see players warming up when I arrived.

The pitch is a notoriously bad drainer and, despite benign weather, while the teams were going through their pre-match drills there was also activity to clear water off the surface.

Fortunately it was successful, with just a short delay to the kick off and one particularly muddy area of the pitch which the players did their best to avoid during the game.

Their was little chance of a postponement once visitors Orkney had travelled, and the lunchtime kick off was to allow them to make the return journey in a day. They headed back across the Pentland Firth with all three points.

Bonar Bridge were playing their final league fixture in the knowledge they were destined to finish bottom. But despite that the first half was a close affair, with a single Orkney goal separating the sides.

The second period was more one-sided in favour of Orkney. They finished with four goals, but could easily have had more.

Migdale Park is a basic venue in terms of facilities, but the scenery more than makes up for it. The pitch is as the far end of a playing field from the pavilion, and is roped off with temporary dugouts on one side.
