Central Midlands League, North Division
Sherwood Colliery 0 Ollerton Town 1 (att 82)
Continuing my theme of seeing newly-promoted sides, this was Sherwood Colliery's opening game in the Central Midlands League, after stepping up from a league I know very little about, the Midlands Amateur Alliance.
The 1-0 defeat flattered them, although if hadn't been for a fine late save by the Ollerton keeper they'd have snatched an unlikely late equaliser. Up to that point, the game's outstanding saves had all been made by the Sherwood keeper, who kept his side in the game with a great display.
Ollerton went ahead after just two minutes, and in the early stages looked like scoring almost every time they went forward. Eventually Sherwood got a foothold in the match, but they were very much second best.
Of course it's hard to predict, with any accuracy, how a season will go based on the opening 90 minutes, and time will tell whether Sherwood face a season of struggle, or whether Ollerton will be challenging for a title.
Off the pitch Sherwood are certainly progressing well. The main pitch at Debdale Park, in Mansfield Woodhouse, is fully enclosed with a steep grass bank on one side giving a good view. There are dugouts on the far side, while at the foot of the banking a concrete base has been laid, suggesting a stand will follow.
